Can a lake plagued by algal blooms become a symbol of sustainable beauty and ecological harmony?

This thesis embarks on an ecological journey, reimagining the relationship between nature, sustainability, and human perception. It delves into the transformation of Echternach Lake, which has long been marred by unsightly algal blooms, into a haven of sustainable serenity. The project unfolds as a symbol of beauty reborn from ecological imbalance, harnessing the latent potential of algae, a resource overlooked and misunderstood.

Through the use of the locally sourced algae, the thesis creates a distinctive feature: a submerged wall in the lake waters, made out of algae-clay-bricks, that will gradually dissolve back into nature.
Over time, it invites people to swim amidst the algae, fostering an appreciation that transcends initial disgust, transforming it into an embrace of the beauty that thrives within. By shifting the narrative from disgust to discovery, this thesis advocates for a conscious lifestyle that values simplicity over excess and nurtures a profound connection with the natural world. It strives to foster eco-awareness, transcending picturesque ideals and embracing the authentic beauty of our environment.

The micro-retreat in London provides a valuable testing ground for the project in Echternach, demonstrating the global potential of algae-infused clay bricks as a sustainable building material. It reinforces the thesis's universal applicability, promoting ecological consciousness and sustainable architecture worldwide.
Through practical experiments and visionary design, the thesis challenges conventional perceptions of beauty, sustainability, and the human role in the Anthropocene era. Ultimately, it seeks to inspire a paradigm shift, inviting all to appreciate the authentic beauty of nature and to actively engage in preserving it for generations to come.
